It is high time to promote open source software in Mauritius. Other countries have already introduced that and are high on..

The website opensource.mu aims at encouraging mauritians to use opensource rather than paid software. Check it out, it's quite an interesting website also suggesting important software that could be used. For e.g instead of using a Windows OS use RedHat's Fedora (My favourite which I am using..), latest is Fedora 11 Leonidas, which is a free OS built and distributed by people ready to help around the globe and maintained by the community called the fedora project.

So, it would be nice if everyone of us could promote opensource software, especially in Mauritius. The link goes here.

Microsoft Surface

The latest elegant and multifunctional device from Microsoft leave us dumbfounded(codename: Milan). The different features are:

Multi Touch Contact.
Multi-user experience.
Object recognition.
Direct interaction.

What I've seen on television personally, is that you have the ability to manipulate the images with your hands (iphone type), drag your perso-images onto any folder you wish. The basic applications are photos, music, virtual concierge, and games, that can be customized for the customers.

A unique feature that comes preinstalled with Surface is the pond effect "Attract" application. Simply, it is a "picture" of water with leaves and rocks within it (a lot like a screen saver used in Windows XP or Vista). By touching the screen, you can create ripples in the water just like you were putting your hand into a real stream. Additionally, the pressure of touch alters the size of the ripple created, and objects placed into the water create a barrier that ripples bounce off, just as they would in real life.

21 December 2012 - End of The World??

I know I might be exaggerating about this topic, but I think it's important to know the opinions of many people.

N.B: Sensible Minds & Souls should stop reading up to here.

Many scientists claim that more and more Tsunamis are going to happen, Global Warming, in some years time, is going to have drastic effects over living beings. Many experts say that there might be be World War 3 because of water, or perhaps petrol. More and more Tornados, Cyclones, Earthquakes, etc etc.. The list is quite long folks. Don't you think that these natural phenomenas and man-driven vile activities are leading us towards the 'begining of the end of the world'? Well you judge after reading hereafter...

What about 21st December 2012?? What is so important to know/grasp about this specific date? THIS DATE IS THE APPROACHING WINTER SOLSTICE 2012 END DATE OF THE MAYAN CALENDAR - which means that the counting in mayan calendar will become 0.0.0.0, compared to gregorian calendar, and that something very rare is going to happen in the sky at sunrise - watch out for the sun. Predictions given by mayans have been quite true till date. For e.g. Tectonic shifts had been foretold by them which today are known as the 'Tsunamis'. Many others have also been foretold. Planet 'Nibiru' also called 'Planet X', will pass near the earth, having exiled for 3600 years.'Ah Nibiru, welcome to the solar system!!'. That specific date also indicates that the Sun, in astronomic terms, conjuncts the intersection of the Milky Way and the plane of the ecliptic. The Milky Way, as most of us know, extends in a general north-south direction in the night sky. The plane of the ecliptic is the track the Sun, Moon, planets and stars appear to travel in the sky, from east to west. It intersects the Milky Way at a 60 degree angle near the constellation Sagittarius. What I want to point out is that this 'conjunction' will bring along with it natural phenomena in the sky or on earth. According to astrologists, astrophysicists, there will be a pole shift some weeks before the 21st December. That is North Pole will become South Pole and South will become North. In such a phase, calamities or call it natural disasters will for sure occur. Which ones??

Well I'm not saying that all these sayings, prophecies might be true. But many religions do coincide with this fact and science, well part of it though, also proves it. My first Techno Trance

Well, as I'm a big fan of Techno songs, I decided to do 1 myself and share it with you. For that I used Fruity Loops v7. I think in all the softwares that I've used to make remixes, I think that Fruity Loops rocks all.

Step 1: Entering the FL Studio environment.

Step 2: Choosing a template, for mine its Trance, well there is a variety of music that you can do, which I won't be saying here coz it's too much.

Step 3: Making a sample beat

Step 4: Improving it by adding closed-hats, and snares and of course Lightspeed effect, oh I love this one.

Step 5: A sample piano roll.. for adding rythms.

Step 6: Editing the playlist part (very important)

Step 7: A final check of my sound.

Final Step: Converting to MP3 Audio.

Mumbai Attacks (India's 9/11)

Mumbai, one of the famous capitals of India and the world, where its worst nightmare struck! Co-ordinated attacks killed more than 130 people!!

Famous Hotels like Oberoi, Taj Hotel, and Leopold Cafe were attacked by terrorists. Some say that these terrorists might have come from Pakistan, others say that they emerged from the 'Mujaheedin Deccan' in India and the rest says from another 'alien' country. But for me Terrorists wherever they come from, they are simply and merely terrorists. "Bonet Blanc, Blanc Bonet, mem kouyonad sa!"

The NSG in India took nearly 3 days (since 27th November) for evacuation of all hostages in Taj. 3 days?? Hmm...
The operation was carried out smoothly and nearly all terrorists were killed. Unfortunately many people died! Among those dead bodies, one MAURITIAN was found. Yes indeed.. ;(

His name was Chaitlall Guness, CEO of State Bank Mauritius(SBM). He was killed by those goddamned terrorists. My sincere condolences to his wife, and his 2 daughters, with whom I'm quite familliar with. ;( I do also sympathise with all those famillies with whom these tragic events befell.

There was a Mauritian Identity Card found in one of the killed terrorists custody. Well, since now we really do not know to whom it belongs to. But further investigation is still on, claimed by the Prime Minister of Mauritius.

I DO CONDEMN THESE TERRORIST ATTACKS WITHOUT FURTHER ELLABORATION!

Who could have thought that after Martin Luthor (Bon la?) King, desperately trying to become president of the US but unfortunately could not, another guy would step on and take up the challenge of becoming one of the most powerful persons on Earth?

Who could have thought that a 'minority' class of the whole US population, would become the US president?

And who has underestimated the power of THIS MAN?

Well, this 'Great' man, whose roots originated from Kenya, started with a 'small' campaign and was last listed to become the true leader. Eventually, history was reinvented, and this guy enriched his campaign to become the first ever 'African' American president of the United States of America.
He said, just after winning the presidential elections, that perhaps it might take a year or even 4 years for the financial crisis to come to a term, and suddenly he said "But, We Can...We can". This shows the true determination and courage of his personality.

Introduction of Summer Time

Mauritius switches to Summer Time on Sunday 26 October 2008

Summer time will be implemented in Mauritius as from 2:00 am local time on Sunday 26 October 2008. It will be adopted on a pilot basis for the summer season 2008-2009 and will end at two o´clock in the morning on Sunday 29 March 2009. The “Daylight-Saving” Time Act was voted by the National Assembly in July this year with a view of generating substantial savings in terms of energy consumption and production.

Mauritius is putting much high emphasis on some major fields, particularly tourism, agriculture & aquaculture, textile sector and information technology. In a way to become more financially stable, Mauritius has undertaken several measures to be able to compete with ever-growing rich countries. One of them includes the 'Introduction of Summer Time', which will indeed save energy thus, will contribute to the economic growth of the country. We will see later how it is going to save energy.

First of all, what is Summer Time??
It is stated in Wikipedia that 'it is the convention of advancing clocks so that afternoons have more daylight and mornings have less.' Well, in our 'ti-pays' we are going to forward our watch by 1 hour. That is, IF IT IS 6am, THE TIME CHANGES TO 7am. Many countries have used this concept since then, such as the UK. It was first introduced by William Willet, an English Builder, in 1907.

But how does it save energy??
As stated above, afternoons will have more daylight than monings. Let me give you a simple example. Imagine a simple baker, Sam, having to wake up early in the morning at 5. He starts making up buns and then selling them. The latter will then close at, say 8 in the evening. With the Intro of Daylight Saving Time, instead of waking at 5, baker will have to wake up at 4. Meaning an additional time of 1 hour. What I would like to stess on is that 1 Hour will be quite profitable. Our Sam is going to have 1 hour plus in the afternoon, to save energy such as LIGHT, and that source of energy which is mostly present is the SUN. We will not have to rely on electrical power for 1 hour a day. Meaning:

1 hour for a day then, 7 hours a week then, 36 hours a month, and thus, 432 HOURS A YEAR SAVED!!

Indeed, it's a great measure to save energy. Hoho, Sam, would be quite happy IN THE LONG RUN. Aha, I've forgotten to mention that in technical terms that if Sam uses 240 Watts (4 Filament Bulbs each 60 watts) of electrical power, thus mathematically, he will save 103,680 Watts a year!!

Well, folks, it's time for you to become greater than Sam.

A way to improve CITS?

Hello friends. As you know, in my last article posted on Sept 20, I had somewhere mentioned about the condition of CITS. Well, you know what? Some friends already started a 'petition'. With the help of the latter, we university students, really expect some good form of improvement!!

I really wish to thank 'Sheikh Ahmad', the pioneer of the petition. I hope that it really helps. If you have not signed the 'petition' form, do so... It's in your benefit, dear uom students.

A 'Locker' Folder in XP

Hye folks, I met a friend the day before yesterday, his name is faardeen and he said that he had a blog. I thought, well, let me have a look at his blog. And I must say that there is a bundle of interesting things out there, especially for software Ebooks. And this is how I came along an interesting article about how to can create a Locking Folder for your files without having to use any special software(That's great, you can put all your interesting FILMS, PHOTOS, etc.. out there, lol).

Being a programming geek, I tested it. Unfortunately, since I'm using windows Vista, it doesn't work. The latter operation works for XP mostly.

Student Union - Representatives of University Students

For those who do not know, every university on this planet has a certain group of students striving for the betterment of the University Students. We call 'em the Student Union.

Well, as part of their work which englobes the word 'betterment' they should be able to cater and understand the needs of current as well as prospective students. Actually at the University of Mauritius, the Elections for the presidency of the Student Union is being held. Some of the campaigns, which I can still recall, fighting to become the new Student Union's representatives are: the 'Student Rights', 'Student Power'(I can't recall more than that).

As such, each faculty must have a representative. Since I'm in the faculty of Engineering, right now, my fac rep is Mr 'BABA'. Well, I must say that this chap has, to some extent, improved the life of students. But, I CONFIRM THAT THERE IS STILL ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT.

A very good example of such a place at UOM that really needs brooming and sweeping is 'CITS'. I'm sure that every student of the University will agree at my point.

Without much ellaborating, I would like to refer you to this blog here whereby 'HOT' discussions are ongoing about the present elections and campaigns. Be sure to post comments there.

Hell, ya, I also wanted to hear some of the Student Campaigns' Goals about what they want to do to improve the life of students on campus. Thx.

GPS Driving Guide in the Mauritian Capital

Hell YA! Amazing title and an amazing project to do! Well I'm currently doing my final year for my course, so as BIG PROJECT/DISSERTAION my project partner and I will have to implement a mobile GPS Guide for anybody who wants a stroll in Port Louis whether it's the first time, or if you are lost or just for a general knowledge about how to get to that place rapidly. Well that was our first choice as project to do, and this is what we got. In all we had to put 10 projects in order of priority. More info about all project proposals here.

So as a semi-pro engineer, I will have to ask myself some fundamental questions...
1) HOW to do it?
2) WHEN?
3) WHERE?

I will also have to take into account other core concepts such as which programming lang to use and in which environment, GPS Technology, etc, which I will not elaborate here coz it's gonna become quite boring for people who do not have a great knowledge of computing.

Even though, I will greatly appreciate anything you suggest or any help about this project/topic, ASAP. Thks...

Euro 2008 - The best 4

The bests always remain. I did not want to blog about the Euro because I thought it would have been more fun to examine some teams till the 1/4 elimination round.

Well the teams that are already through the semi finals are:

Germany

Turkey

Russia

Spain

From my point of view I found that Russia has got the best of attacks. Quite surprising, because it's the first time that a rather 'non-favourite' team is on the verge of winning the title! The expert for this Euro 2008, the legendary Lothar Matthaus, former German footballer, said that as from now the favourite team for the competition is Russia. He also added that their style of playing is based mostly on speed and mentality and that could be the football of the future.

Ahhmmm, well key players that almost surprised me, from my side, for this Euro 2008, were:

Arshavin: Playing for Russia, this guy has done some excellent job for his last 2 games played. He is a player that has good shooting power, speed, good physique, excellent dribbling techniques and most importantly high team-work ability. The latter's going to surprise us more. Shall we see?

Altintop: Turkey's player, striker 'origin', this competent and excellent footballer got more than one trick in his bag. He is almost well placed for lobbing or giving reception of the ball from laterals. Mark this guy.

Swenssteiger: Mamamia, The 'cristiano ronaldo' of german football (Hell sorry portugal fans...), this white coated hairy guy (lol), is actually on the verge of signing for Bayern Munchen. The actual manshaft player has shown some excellent dribbling techniques as well as scoring a goal or somehow assisting other teamates for the reception of balls. This briefly shows the competency of this guy. I don't know if you have seen this guy on action but from my side it's two thumbs up!

David Villa: Excellent dribbler, excellent scorer, excellent assist, excellent vision, excellent speed, excellent mentality, ouf...The list of appraisal is quite long. Judge this guy by yourself.

The schedules for matches to be played for semi finals are:

Germany vs Turkey - Wednesday 25th June @ 22.45 MRU time

Russia vs Spain - Thursday 26th June @ 22.45 MRU time

So, tommorow we are going to know the first team who's going to the finals. Is it going to be Germany or Turkey? I leave the rest to you guys and remember: MAY THE BEST WIN!!

Budget 2008/2009 for Mauritius

Welcome back guys, I know that it's been some time since I've not blogged, but circumstances were such. Well, since I'm also a fanatic of Football, Euro can also be added to the list of reasons for my lateness of posting. So, today I'm going to express my views about SOME measures the latest budget has stated. Yeah, only views!! Because listing every measures and precautions might take more than one page!!

Summer Time
This measure is an encouragement to save energy. The actual time is increased by one hour and this has already been introduced in some European countries. Thus you will have to wake up one hour in advance and pretend that "Oooh gosh, it's already 6 am!" and get back to work. But how does it help to save energy? Well 1 hour of sun rays in advance means helping the country to save 15 megawatts of electricity. Hmmm, sounds good.

Tax
For income tax, exemption threshold increases by Rs 25 000. Add this to your exemption threshold for whether or not you will be taxable. This is, well, a relatively good measure to bridge the gap between the poor and the rich. However, I had an English teacher who always said that "poverty can never be eradicated!". Well let's see...

Education
The government will help the most needy, that is those whose parents do not earn more than Rs 7 500, to continue their studies. A loan will be made available to them so that they can continue pursuing their studies. They do repay this loan after their studies when they have a job. A measure which interests mostly tertiary prospective students. I'm going to say a few words in French: "Education accessible a tout le monde mais on ne peut pas dire que celle ci est gratuite!"

Renewable sources of energy
You are all encouraged to save energy. The government, through 'La Banque de Développement' (DBM Bank), offers Rs 10 000 to acquire a solar water heater. In other words, if you want to buy a solar water heater and you borrow money from the DBM, you will get a discount of Rs 10 000. But I really don't understand how you can call this a discount? You are borrowing the money meaning you will have to repay it sooner or later! So, why the discount? Maybe I'm wrong. Can someone guide me more precisely abou this measure stated? Comments are welcome.

And, I would also like to add that there exists different types of solar water heaters each of different costs. For you now to make the choice.

ALCOHOL AND CIGARETTES
The price of alcoholic products and cigarettes will change: for alcohol, depending on the product, prices will either decline or increase but not significantly. Anything that will change is how to calculate the excise duties on these products. The difference for the state coffers will be "marginal" according to the Finance Minister. He did not give further details on the price of cigarettes.

Medicines
TVA has been abolished by government as from last week which was imposed on medicines. That's cool.

Well, that's all the principal measures that 'kinda interest me ya'. There are also other important measures and precautions stated for 'Income support', 'Housing', 'Pensioners' etc... which I've not posted(You imagine the load of work and cost of typing these issues.. Hey, I'm not lazy!).

There are things very interesting and intriguing about this budget.

The LADIES must be very happy about the prices of make-ups and accessories. However, there might be some form of 'masquarade' directly or indirectly of what the opposition leader claims. For example, the finance minister has not stressed much about general incomes etc.. Bof, I do not want to get too much involved in politics. You never know...

The MT9 Audio Format

This highly acclaimed new audio format, mt9, is said to replace the most sollicited mp3 standard. It was first conceived by korean Computer Engineers at ETRI(Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute). As what I've read it's also known as 'Music 2.0' like 'Web 2.0' which is a new evolution of the era.

"It was selected as a candidate item for the new digital music standard at a regular meeting of Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG), the international body of the digital music and video industry, held in France late April." - Source: pcmag-arabic

For all rookies of technology, mp3 is a compressed audio format, MPEG1. Smaller not in playback time, but in space. It can be up to 10 times smaller. Meaning: If you want to store 10 songs on your cd with an original uncompressed format, with mp3(extension being .mp3 like .wav, .wma, .ram etc.) you will be able to store up to 100 songs!! Isn't that superb?

So, coming to our original post, mp3 is going to become my old granny's thing, since mt9 is poised to replace that. But first of all how does it work?

Every audio format earlier did not have 6 audio-channels equalizer...Hah, MT9 does. The channels included are: voice, chorus, piano, guitar, bass and drum. It is quite an advantage because, for instance, if you want to sing it yourself rather than hearing the original singer, then you can turn off the voice channel and start singing by yourself, keeping the music and everything else...Well, I admit that's really good for a bathroom singer like me. You may also wish to turn off all music instruments channel and concentrate only on the singer's notes. Incredibly superb...

So far, MT9 is being shaped into commercial use by venture company Audizen. It was selected as a candidate item for the new digital music standard at a regular meeting of Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG), the international body of the digital music and video industry, held in France late April.

Samsung and LG, lately are also interested in equipping their sounds with mt9. So, for which one would you go for: mp3 or mt9? (pfff, I know the answer...)

Hye everybody, as the title speaks for itself, needless to put an introduction for, since it's so popular, this pc game. I've installed and played it and believe me, it's not money spent for nothing.

The graphics are so good that you might not believe your eyes, as if you were taking real soccer players and playin' with em'.

Well, what's also surprising about this game is the entrance theme...IT'S SO WELL MADE, IT'S SO ORIGINAL, AND IT'S SO euh...GOOD!! Being the most respected football title on the planet, Pro Evolution Soccer continues to be one of Konami’s flagship titles. The indications are that this latest incarnation will surpass everything that went before it and prove that PES 2008 will be the greatest version of the beautiful game to date.

As such there have always been pros and cons which I'm going to elaborate briefly below:

Good graphics(Far better than that toy called 'Fifa 2008')

Good dribbling

Excellent strategies setup for any formation settings

Better than previous PES

Not much improved requirements

You need some 2 months to be able to really master the game and become a top player. Level Order: Beginner,Amateur,Regular,Professional, and TOP PLAYER(Most difficult).

Still this latest release of Konami will make you guys dumber despite some negative aspects of the game which I can't elaborate, since the positive points outweigh the negative ones. So enjoy...

"La Punition Corporelle"

Well, I'm not a great fanatic at writing french, but when it concerns a dashing title, I admit, I like it better off in French!!

Anyway, for those who don't understand the language, the title above means "The Bodily Punishment". All this happened at a well known State Secondary School in the North of Mauritius. I've posted a video about the guy who got at most 4 slaps (SONORE NET SA!!) with his teacher. The length is about 37 seconds.

The Minister of Education Hon. D.Gokhool claims that an enquiry has already been setup... However what he said was a bit shocking(As seen in a carricature in le Defi newspaper):

In 350,000 students, 1 unfortunate student got beaten quite harshly. Doesn't matter...

As if this "somebody" was "nobody" at all!! Its quite astonishing to hear him say something like that... Personally, I'm not saying that because I'm against anybody, but I know that I live in a democratic country and I have the freedom of speech, and it applies for all of us Mauritians.

Meaning there may come a time when there will be no students left and he'll still be pledging:

In 1 student, 1 unfortunate student got beaten quite harshly. Doesn't matter...Heeuuh?!?!

However, he said that the teacher who commited this 'CRIME' (Violation of the law here means a crime) will be severely reprimanded. At least he said something, well perhaps, positive.

According to other students in that class, they claim that this was not the first time. It happens quite often. According to some source, the video, which was filmed by a quite 'good-reflexed' guy, was compiled on the 1st term of school. And Le defi got it a few days back.

Furthermore they also said that it was high-time to capture the prey with a bait. And as a matter of fact they took that student that day to be the bait, and caused the prey to fall into the net-trap.

Now, according to me this type of punishment might cause some type of frustration at the child's development (I mean at such an age: 15yrs), which indeed will cause a declination on his overall.

Well after having viewed the video I must really say that, the teacher alone is not to be blamed... The student might have said a foul word which caused the furiosity of the teacher, redsulting in some 3 to 4 slaps...This is mauritius, my friends...

Hye there, it's really the first time that I'm creating a blog to start putting my opinions and ideas about how things are going/being done nowadays in our country: 'Mauritius' or any other country in the world.

I just can't forget to say that Blogspot is a really a good place where you can start blogging.

I wanted to start this blog earlier, but as there was exams at the university, I was damned occupied...Anyways, now that's all over and as from now things gonna be extremely 'smooth-going'(I hope so...).

So, till then, next time, I'm going to prepare a good topic for blogging and I'm really waiting for replies/opinions/ideas/questions from all of you out there, be it locally or internationally.

Gosh, I'm so excited(in its true meaning...lol).
